New York, September 25, 2025 — At the invitation of the Minderoo Foundation, members of the CISS Project on Artificial Intelligence and International Security took part in the “Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence in Military” during the UN High-Level Week in New York. The event brought together scholars from leading institutions and think tanks—including Tsinghua University, Peking University, China University of Political Science and Law, the Brookings Institution, the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and New America—as well as government representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, Kenya, Denmark, and other countries.

On September 26, 2025, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University held The 22nd CISS StratFocus Forum with the theme “Central Europe in Geopolitical Perspective.” The keynote speaker was Dr. Kong Yuan, Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of European Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The discussants included Dr. Wang Hongyi, Associate Professor at the School of European Languages and Cultures, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Dr. Ning Ya, Lecturer at the School of History, Renmin University of China. The forum was moderated by Shi Yan, Assistant Research Fellow at CISS.

Recently, Daniel Russel, Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, visited the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS), Tsinghua University. He engaged in discussions with CISS experts on China-U.S. relations and regional hotspot issues.

On September 16, 2025, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University convened the 95th session of the Strategic and Security Seminar, titled “The Development and Challenges of Intelligent Unmanned Technology Applications.” The seminar was chaired by Xiao Qian, Deputy Director of CISS and Deputy Director of the Institute for AI International Governance.

On September 9, 2025, Ms. Sevim Dagdelen, Vice Chair of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht – Reason and Justice (BSW), visited the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University. She held in-depth discussions with Liu Feng, Deputy Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Deputy Director of CISS, and Professor in the Department of International Relations; Chen Qi, Deputy Director of CISS and Professor in the Department of International Relations; Qu Wei, Director of the Global Learning Center of the School of Sociology; Shi Yan, Assistant Research Fellow at CISS; and Xing Houyuan, expert of the Global Alliance for Trade in Services. The discussions focused on current international dynamics, the Ukraine crisis, as well as China-U.S. and China-Europe relations.

On September 9, 2025, the second Financial Review Asia Summit was convened in Sydney, Australia. Co-hosted by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) and the Asia Society Australia, the summit brought together prominent figures from the political and business communities of Asia and Australia to discuss development and business opportunities in Asia and assess potential risks arising from geopolitical shifts. Fu Ying, Former Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Australia, was invited to attend the event. She delivered a speech and engaged in a dialogue with Jessica Sier, North Asia Correspondent of AFR.

On September 9, 2025, Daniel Leaf, former Deputy Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, visited the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University for discussions with CISS experts on U.S.-China relations and regional hotspot issues.

US–China relations under Trump’s second term have entered a fragile stalemate. While complete economic decoupling remains elusive, both sides are shifting toward strategic and psychological disengagement – reducing reliance on each other’s long-term strategies. This trend may reduce incentives for negotiation, heighten uncertainty over Taiwan, yet also enable future bilateral reorientation.

On July 29, Da Wei, Director of the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University, published an article titled “What Does China Want in Ukraine” on the website of Foreign Affairs. In the article, Da Wei outlined China’s principled position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, analyzed the discussions and views within various sectors in China on the Ukraine issue, and offered his assessment of the prospects for peace as well as China’s possible role in the matter.

From July 3 to 7, Da Wei, Director of the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University and Professor in the Department of International Relations, visited Russia to teach at the summer school jointly attended by Chinese and Russian students, organized by the Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Russia. The theme of this year’s summer school was “Perspectives of the Global Majority: Practices and Narratives.” Da Wei delivered a special lecture titled “Multipolarity: Challenges and Opportunities” to students from both China and Russia. This marked the second consecutive year that he has taught at HSE. Following his lecture, Da Wei engaged in in-depth discussions with Russian scholars from HSE, the Russian International Affairs Council, and other institutions.

On July 17, 2025, the "Kick-off Meeting for the Transboundary Water Resources Cooperation Project and Launch Ceremony of the Lancang-Mekong Watch Website," hosted by the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University, was successfully held in Beijing, marking the official launch of the Lancang-Mekong Watch platform.
