On November 16, the Centre for International Security and Strategy (CISS), Tsinghua University received Craig B. Allen, President of the U.S.-China Business Council, and hosted a dialogue on “China-US Economic Relations: Decoupling or Recoupling”.

The dialogue was presided over by Da Wei, Director of CISS and presented by Craig B. Allen. Students from Schwarzman Scholars, Tsinghua University’s Student Association of International and Strategic Studies (SAISS), CISS Youth and some of the Yale-Tsinghua Strategic Youth Dialogue members participated in the dialogue.

In his speech, President Allen traced the history of trade between the two sides, highlighted the importance and role of both countries in the global market, and analyzed their current competition and cooperation in various industries. Citing Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations, Allen analyzed the relations between national security and freedom of trade, as well as the trade-offs and reconciliation between the two elements by relevant authorities. In his view, the trade between the U.S. and China is extensive in scope and significant in volume. The cooperation between the two is driven by the inherent need for strategically mutual benefits, while competition in such areas as high-tech products only reflects the nature of specific market segments.
