On September 14th, China Forum under the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University held the 5th Dialogue Among the Wise. Panelists discussed the latest dynamics in the South China Sea, factors affecting peace and stability in the area, and capacity building for maritime crisis management at the seminar themed “South China Sea - How to Maintain Peace and Stability?”
Hosted by Tang Xiaoyang, chair of the Department of International Relations at Tsinghua University, the event brought together Rommel Banlaoi, president of the Philippine Society for International Security Studies; Zhou Bo, senior fellow at CISS; Eric Baculinao, Beijing bureau chief at NBC News; Yan Yan, director of the Research Center of Oceans Law and Policy, National Institute for South China Sea Studies; and Enrico V. Gloria, assistant professor, Department of Political Science, University of the Philippines.
Panelists believe that despite the return of tension in the South China Sea and the pressure on China-Philippines relations, there is still great potential for cooperation in such areas like trade, people-to-people exchanges and environmental protection between the two countries. Through dialogue and consultation, China and the Philippines will be able to maintain close communication and promote practical cooperation to empower a stable bilateral relationship.
