On December 13-14, 2024, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University held the 2024 Year-End Situation Theory-Discussing Meeting under the theme of “Meeting Challenges, Achieving Transcendence.” More than 30 experts, including CISS Academic Committee members, experts, and fellows, were invited to the Meeting for discussion.
On the evening of December 13, Professor Da Wei, Director of CISS, reported the work of CISS in 2024 to the participating experts. Over the year, all members of CISS have united and overcome the difficulties and challenges encountered in their own development; the number of research results has continued to maintain a high level; and the key topics have achieved good results. International exchanges have been more active than ever, and key activities such as the Security and Strategy Seminar and U.S.-China People’s Dialogue have achieved outstanding effects. The work of the China Forum has been steadily transformed, and new highlights have been formed in the cultivation of young talents.
On December 14, the Meeting focused on “The Evolution of International Order and International Patterns,” “Prospects and Challenges of China-U.S. Relations,” “The Direction of Great Power Relations under the Ukraine and the Middle East Conflicts,” and “China’s Relations with Neighboring Countries under the New Situation” to conduct discussions. Participating experts believe that major events such as the second tenure of Donald Trump as U.S. president have highlighted the major shift in the international order in 2024. Looking ahead, China-U.S. relations are facing many uncertainties, and regional hotspots and China’s relations with neighboring countries are ushering in a new chapter. Participating experts discussed in depth China’s proactive response in the face of serious challenges and uncertainties. According to them, only by looking beyond China-U.S. relations, moving beyond reactive responses, doing our own work well, and focusing on the grand vision of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation can we seize the opportunities, resolve the challenges, seek benefits and avoid harm, and better safeguard China’s national interests and national security.
In the lunch session on December 14, Fan Chunliang, Research Fellow of the Institutes of Science and Development at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Zhang Anyuan, Chief Economist of HongShan Capital Group (formerly Sequoia Capital China), delivered lunch speeches on the U.S. science and technology strategy towards China and the U.S.-China economic and trade relations, respectively.
