On June 19, Senior Colonel Zhou Bo (ret.), senior fellow at Tsinghua University’s Center for International Security and Strategy and a China Forum expert, gave an interview to CNBC on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Beijing and China-US relations.
Blinken’s visit, though important, will not completely reverse the downward spiral in the bilateral relationship, given the tensions between China and the US, said Zhou. Structural differences between the two countries can hardly be resolved in the short term, he added.
On the other hand, the visit did send a positive signal amid tensions that the US and China could engineer a breakthrough in stabilizing and improving their ties based on the Bali consensus, and in clarifying the bottom lines in their relations in order to avoid escalation and conflict, said Zhou.
