On January 7, 2022, CISS and the Stimson Center co-host the US-China Roundtable entitled “The Ukraine Crisis and China-US-Russia Relations”. Among Chinese panelists were CISS Director Da Wei, Adjunct Fellow Zhao Minghao, and Assistant Fellow Song Bo; Feng Shaolei, Director, Center for Cooperation and Development in Neighboring Countries, East China Normal University; and Cui Hongjian, Director, Department for European Studies, China Institute of International Studies. The event also featured Yun Sun, Co-Director, East Asia Program, Stimson Center; Michael Kimmage, Chair, Department of History, The Catholic University of America; Emma Ashford, Senior Fellow, Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, Atlantic Council; Bruce McClintock, Lead, Space Enterprise Initiative, RAND Corporation; and Leiv Lunde, Senior Asia Advisor, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The panelists analyzed the current state of the Ukraine crisis, assessed the objectives, concerns, and means of the US, Europe, and Russia regarding the conflict, and examined where the Ukraine situation might be going from here. In response to the crisis in Ukraine and similar international security conflicts, the discussants also explored how stakeholders should adjust their roles, coordinate their positions, and cooperate on managing international security crises to avert escalation of conflicts and even outbreak of war.
