On October 24 and 25, 2022, Da Wei, director of the Center for International Security and Strategy and professor at the Department of International Relations at Tsinghua University, participated in the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club and the 26th Stockholm China Forum via video link, at which he compared notes with scholars from various countries and answered questions from the audiences.
On October 24, Professor Da Wei joined the 19th Annual Meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, themed “A Post-Hegemonic World: Justice and Security for Everyone.” He was a panelist at Session 2 of the event, titled “Cuban Missile Crisis After Sixty Years: Is Nuclear Deterrence Still in Place?” The discussion was moderated by Andrey Bezrukov, associate professor at the Department of Applied International Analysis at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, and also featured Muhammad Athar Javed, founder of Pakistan House; Robert Legvold, professor at Columbia University; Dmitry Stefanovich, research fellow at the Sector of Military Economy and Innovations of the Russian Academy of Sciences; and Dmitri Trenin, director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, among others. The panelists compared the constants and shifts in international security during the Cuban missile crisis 60 years ago and amid the current crisis in Ukraine, and looked into whether nuclear deterrence is still effective in the present era.
On October 25, Professor Da Wei participated in the session titled “Evolution of the Russia-China Partnership” at the 26th Stockholm China Forum, which was held by the German Marshall Fund in cooperation with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The discussion was moderated by Thorsten Benner, senior research fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin, and also featured Nad’a Kovalčíková, senior analyst at the EU Institute for Security Studies; Alexander Gabuev, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; and David Shullman, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, among others.
As the participants and audiences of both events were very interested in China’s positions and policies on relevant issues, Professor Da Wei shared with them the policies of the Chinese government and how the Chinese people really feel about those issues, and answered questions on an extensive number of topics from both his fellow panelists and the audiences.
