From June 23 to 27, Sun Chenghao, Fellow at the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University, led CISS Youth members Li Yijie and Gong Xiaoyu on a research visit to New York and Washington, D.C. The delegation held 20 meetings and roundtable discussions with nearly 60 representatives from U.S. think tanks, chambers of commerce, businesses, media, international organizations, U.S. government agencies, and congressional offices, focusing on China-U.S. relations and related topics.
In New York, the delegation visited the Foreign Policy Association, Asia Society, National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the United Nations, Bank of China researchers, as well as journalists from the Financial Times and Phoenix TV. In-depth discussions were held on U.S. foreign policy and the current state of China-U.S. relations. During the visit, Sun Chenghao also gave an interview to Phoenix TV on the dynamics of China-U.S.-Europe relations.
In Washington, the delegation met with the U.S.-China Business Council, Congressional Research Service, Eurasia Group, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, Brookings Institution, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Center for a New American Security, JPMorgan Chase, German Marshall Fund of the United States, and officials from the U.S. government and Congress. The discussions explored the potential trajectory of U.S. policy toward China under a second Trump administration and the challenges and opportunities in China-U.S. relations.
This tightly scheduled and productive visit enabled the CISS delegation to engage in extensive dialogues with U.S. political, business, and academic communities. As the second CISS Youth visit to the U.S. for policy research and academic dialogue, the trip conveyed the perspectives of Chinese scholars and youth, and leveraged the flexibility of Track II diplomacy to establish an effective communication mechanism, laying the groundwork for future exchanges.
