In July, China Forum expert John Gong gave an interview to China Face, explaining the takeaways and prospects in the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, which was held in Beijing in July 2024.

In the new era with President Xi Jinping at the helm, the commitment to reform and opening up conceived at the first edition of the third plenary session remains unchanged, with more emphasis on the wellbeing of the people, said Professor Gong. The meeting also spotlighted bottlenecks and structural problems that have been constraining China’s growth. Gong emphasized the need to enhance the role of the market mechanism and create a fairer and more dynamic market environment. He also believes that in some emerging sectors, especially high-tech industries, the Chinese market is showing great potential and investment attractiveness.
