From June 16 to 17, Sun Chenghao, Associate Research Fellow at the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University, was invited to attend a two-day workshop at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) in Sweden. The workshop, themed “Priorities at the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear Weapons,” was organized and hosted by researchers from SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Programme and the Governance of Artificial Intelligence Programme, and brought together a broad range of international experts.
The workshop focused on several key topics: the pathways through which artificial intelligence is being integrated into nuclear and conventional weapons systems, the implications of AI for nuclear stability, and the importance of maintaining human involvement in decision-making processes.
Participants also explored how to regulate the use of AI in nuclear and related weapons systems, with particular attention to the role of transparency and confidence-building measures. Discussions further covered foundational steps for implementing governance measures and identified key “red lines” at the intersection of AI and nuclear weapons, as well as core elements within risk-reduction frameworks.
