On May 20, 2025, Ollie Shiell, CEO and Co-Founder of the UK National Committee on China (UKNCC), visited the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University. He held in-depth discussions with Professor Da Wei, Director of CISS and faculty member of the Department of International Relations, on China-UK relations and major global issues.
Professor Da noted that recent high-level economic and trade talks between China and the United States were held in Geneva, Switzerland, resulting in key agreements, including plans to adjust tariffs. Countries around the world are closely watching the "spillover effects" of these changes. At the same time, a healthier and more stable relationship between China and the UK—as well as between China and Europe—serves the fundamental interests of all parties and contributes to global political and economic stability. China and the UK have great potential to cooperate on global crises and international challenges.
Mr. Shiell stated that since taking office, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promoted domestic reforms and sought to enhance the UK's global influence. He expressed hope that UK-China relations will return to a pragmatic and cooperative track. He also noted the challenge facing both the UK and the EU in managing their relationship with a potential new Trump administration within the broader framework of transatlantic relations.
The meeting was also attended by CISS Non-Resident Fellow Zheng Xiyuan, Assistant Research Fellow Shi Yan, and Guo Jia, Director of the China Forum Project at CISS.
