On December 14, 2021, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University held its 22nd Security and Strategy Seminar, which focused on the Summit for Democracy hosted by the United States. The seminar was moderated by CISS Director DA Wei.
The event featured panelists including JING Yuejin and YANG Xuedong, professors of the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University; ZHAO Kejin, Vice Dean of Tsinghua’s School of Social Sciences and CISS Deputy Director; PAN Wei, Professor of the School of International Studies and Director of the Center for Chinese and Global Affairs, Peking University; WANG Wen, Executive Dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China and Researcher at the Financial Research Center of the Counsellors’ Office of the State Council of China; DIAO Daming, Associate Professor of Renmin University of China and CISS Fellow; ZHAO Minghao, Senior Fellow at the Institute of International Studies of Fudan University and CISS Fellow; AN Gang, Senior Editor for World Affairs Magazine and CISS Fellow; SUN Chenghao, CISS Fellow; and MA Guochun, Assistant Fellow at CISS.
The discussants evaluated the Summit for Democracy and explored the practices of democracy in the US and across the world from multiple perspectives. It was generally agreed that the Summit has failed to deliver the expected outcome for the Biden administration, and that the US approach of provoking ideological confrontation runs completely counter to the global trend today.
