On October 5, 2021, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University held an online training session for its interns for Fall Semester 2021, where CISS Deputy Director XIAO Qian, Assistant Fellow DONG Ting, Fellow SUN Chenghao and two current intern representatives met with this semester’s 31 interns.
Ms. Xiao Qian kicked off with an overview of CISS and the self-development opportunities it offers for the interns, and encouraged the 2021 cohort to make full use of the resources available to equip themselves with the know-how they need during the internship. Introducing the institution’s efforts in collecting and compiling oversea information for its International Security and Strategy Studies Reviews, Dr. Dong Ting gave targeted comments on previous reviews and provided specific guidance addressing wording and expression. Dr. Sun Chenghao introduced the institution’s monthly top news logs, noting that it is essential to record the key information and ensure accuracy and conciseness when writing such documents, and encouraged the interns to make the most of the opportunities at CISS for good exchanges of ideas and inspirations.
The onboarding was followed by an experience-sharing from two CISS intern representatives, including Ms. WANG Jingshu, who graduated from Xinya College of Tsinghua University and is currently a graduate student at the School of International Studies, Renmin University of China (RUC). She shared her insights gathered from her work, achievements, and experiences during her time at CISS, noting the valuable resources offered by this internship, such as the high-quality conferences, the sharing of research output, and the like-minded mentors and fellow colleagues. She also pointed out three essential attributes for interns—being self-disciplined, a good team player, and a proactive learner. Ms. CUI Yuanrui, an undergraduate majoring in international politics at RUC, also shared her unique experiences and takeaways as a CISS intern, encouraging her new fellow interns to develop their professional and academic skills during their internship. She also made suggestions addressing further improvements of the Center’s conference services.
The recruitment of CISS interns for Fall Semester 2021 rolled out in September 2021, and after careful resume screenings and two rounds of interviews, ten highly-motivated and competent students and recent graduates were selected from 39 applicants, in total with 22 retained summer interns, forming a team of 33 interns for the fall semester (list attached).
CISS attaches great importance to talent cultivation as it grows as a think tank, and is committed to fostering young students with a global and strategic vision. As our interns participate in the events of CISS with the support of our experts, they are offered the opportunities to interact with renowned scholars in the fields of security and strategy, diplomacy and international relations at home and abroad, to observe major domestic and international conferences, and to engage in research on critical global issues, through which we hope will equip them with a broader vision, deeper insight and greater competence.
