CISS and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Hold “2024 U.S.-China Track Ⅱ Dialogue”

On September 26-27, 2024, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) held the “2024 U.S.-China Track II Dialogue” at CISS. Da Wei, Director of CISS and Professor of the Department of International Relations at Tsinghua University, and Evan Feigenbaum, Vice President for Studies at CEIP, co-moderated the event which featured two sessions: “Sino-U.S. Relations” and “Russo-Ukrainian War and the China-Russia-U.S. Trilateral Relations.” Experts and scholars from China and the U.S. engaged in in-depth discussions during the event.

In the session “Sino-U.S. Relations,” experts held in-depth dialogues on the current status of relations between the two countries, the impact of U.S. domestic politics on future ties, and the risk of decoupling in the economic, trade, and scientific and technological fields. Both sides emphasized the need to actively maintain and stabilize bilateral relations and grasp the cooperation opportunities on major global issues from the perspective of the fundamental comprehensive development of the country and its citizens, instead of responding to strategic issues with tactical thinking.

In the session “Russo-Ukrainian War and the China-Russia-U.S. Trilateral Relations,” experts and scholars from both sides mainly discussed the future direction of China-Russia relations, China-U.S. relations, and the Ukraine Crisis and its impact on the global order, covering such topics as nuclear deterrence policy, energy trade, China-Russia-U.S. economic interactions, and the role and position of China and the U.S. in the Ukraine Crisis. Chinese experts reiterated China’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine issue, advocating for the resolution of the conflict through peaceful negotiations and efforts to promote the peace process.
