Da Wei Participates in the Jimmy Carter Forum on U.S.-China Relations

January 1, 2024, marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States (US). At the invitation of the Carter Center, the US, Professor Da Wei, Director of the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University, visited Atlanta, the US, on January 9-10, to participate in the first Forum in Honor of Jimmy Carter & the 45th Anniversary of U.S.-China Relations. The event brought together US scholars from such institutions as the Carter Center, the National Committee on United States-China Relations, the US-China Business Council, Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, the Asia Society, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and Georgetown University and Chinese scholars from Tsinghua University, Fudan University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies. In addition to speakers, the Forum attracted nearly 350 experts, scholars, and people to participate both offline and online. Xie Feng, Chinese Ambassador to the United States; and Nicholas Burns, U.S. Ambassador to China, delivered remarks via video for this event.

CISS Director Da Wei gave speeches as a guest speaker in three parts of the Forum: the first panel of “Cycles of Crisis & Conflict: Political & Military Security in U.S.-China Relations,” a closed-door discussion on “The Taiwan Question and the 2024 Taiwan Region Election and US Presidential Election,” and “Resuming Academic Exchanges between the US and China.”

This Forum stood as the sole commemorative academic event organized by the US institution in the US to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the US and China. Formerly known as the Carter Center Forum on U.S.-China Relations, the event has been rebranded as the Jimmy Carter Forum on U.S.-China Relations this year, paying homage to the pivotal contributions made by US President Carter and Comrade Deng Xiaoping towards the normalization of US-China relations.
