On August 10, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University and the Brookings Institution held the first meeting of the Terminology Working Group for US-China Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence and International Security via video link. Experts from the two sides discussed AI-related terminology and exchanged views on the terminological framework and the concept of entries.

The Chinese and US experts had a preliminary discussion on the framework and entries’ table of contents of the glossary on AI and agreed to have regular dialogues and consultations later to enhance the common understanding of the relevant concepts and terminology between the two sides. The experts also agreed to give their explanations on the specific entries in preparation for further working group dialogues.

In October 2019, CISS and the Brookings Institution jointly established the “US-China Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence and International Security” project, with seven rounds of dialogues organized so far. The Terminology Working Group was founded at the seventh round of dialogue, aiming at enhancing the communication between Chinese and US experts on AI-related concepts, narrowing the differences at the level of mutual understanding, and exploring feasible measures to jointly address the security challenges and risks posed by AI.
