On May 27, 2022, the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) of Tsinghua University held the 37th Security and Strategy Seminar titled “US Strategy toward China in the Era of AI.” Experts and scholars were invited to discuss two key topics: “US competitive AI strategy toward China” and “How China should respond to Biden’s competitive strategy”.

Panelists analyzed the dynamics of global AI competition and militarization, the US competitive AI strategy toward China, and the challenges of AI for international security and governance. In addition, they discussed China’s opportunities and policy responses from the perspective of maintaining international security and opening up a new development landscape. It was believed that the advances in AI will have a significant impact on global security, and that China needs to step up its research on and policy responses to AI-related security risks amid Washington’s intensified crackdown on its tech sector. At the same time, the two countries should strengthen communication and dialogue on the security risks associated with the application AI.

The event was moderated by CISS Fellows Zhu Rongsheng and Dong Ting. CISS Deputy Directors Xiao Qian and Chen Qi delivered opening and concluding remarks. Among the panelists were Liu Chong, executive director of the Institute of International Security Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations; Xu Yuan, professor at Beijing Institute of Technology; Li Hengyang, associate researcher at the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Que Tianshu, professor at the Center for Rule of Law Strategy Studies, East China University of Political Science and Law; and Qi Haotian, assistant professor at the School of International Studies, Peking University.
