In recent years, the trajectory of U.S.–China relations has become one of the world’s most closely watched issues, with public opinion playing an increasingly significant role in shaping this dynamic.Various international surveys suggest that while certain areas of convergence exist in mutual perceptions and attitudes between Chinese and American societies, substantial divergences remain . However, the design and interpretation of such surveys often entail inherent limitations — they reflect facets of social psychology, yet may overlook or even distort the complexities of reality. Thus, understanding and critically assessing these polls is essential for deepening our comprehension of U.S.–China relations.
This roundtable aims to examine U.S.–China polls and public opinion through the lens of contemporary youth perspectives — exploring which findings merit recognition, which offer meaningful insights, and which shortcomings call for critical reflection. At the same time, the event seeks to inspire young Chinese participants to reflect deeply on how public opinion influences the evolution of U.S.–China relations, and to consider whether public sentiment can be guided or reshaped through policy narratives, media framing, and social interaction. Through open dialogue and the exchange of ideas, the roundtable not only seeks to enhance young people’s understanding of the complexities of international relations but also aspires to contribute the wisdom and voices of a new generation toward fostering a more rational and constructive U.S.–China engagement.
