On June 21-23, Zhao Minghao, professor at the Center for American Studies of Fudan University and a China Forum expert, attended a plenary meeting of the Trilateral Commission in Brussels.
With a central theme “From a World of Confrontation Back to Cooperation,” the event covered a variety of topics, including European nationalism, geo-economic risks, the dynamics across Eurasia and the Middle East, the international position of the US dollar, the West and the Global South, and more. Speaking in Panel 6 titled “Technology at the Core of the US-China Rivalry,” Professor Zhao noted that the US geo-technological competition against China has been intensifying, which not only undermines China’s development interests but also other countries and the global technological advancement. China has been an advocate of safeguarding and promoting global technological cooperation, managing mutual vulnerabilities and risks in technological cooperation, expanding win-win cooperation, and deepening coordination of international governance in AI and other areas.
Panelists agree that China is a key influencer in maintaining global macroeconomic stability, addressing climate change and energy transition, as well as managing geopolitical conflicts, and that it should play a greater role in global affairs in the future.
Founded in 1973, the Trilateral Commission is a global membership organization that has brought together senior policymakers, business leaders, and representatives of media and academe across its three pillars of North America, Europe, and Asia to discuss and propose solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems.
