China Forum Expert Zhao Minghao Gives Lecture to Australian Defence College

On May 2, Zhao Minghao, a China Forum expert, professor at the Institute of International Studies of Fudan University, and deputy director of the University’s Center for American Studies, was invited to give a lecture, themed “China’s Foreign Policy and Sino-US Relations” at a training course for senior military officers and civil servants at the Australian Defence College.

Moderated by Colonel Grant Motley of the Australian Defence College, the lecture brought together participants from 17 countries, including officers at the rank of colonel and above in the navy, army, air force and other military corps and government officials in foreign affairs, trade, border security and other departments. Professor Zhao analyzed China’s commitment to peaceful development, and explained important concepts and initiatives in China’s foreign policy, such as the Community of a Shared Future for Mankind, Major Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics, and the Belt and Road Initiative. He looked back on the history of China-US ties, shared research results on the adjustment of America’s strategic approach to China, main areas of competition between the two countries, and ways to manage the bilateral relationship, and elaborated on China’s principles and efforts in handling its relations with the US.

Then, the participants and Professor Zhao shared with each other their perspectives on South China Sea, Taiwan, Pacific island countries, and geopolitical competition.
