On March 31, 2024, Tang Xiaoyang, chair of the department of international relations at Tsinghua University and a China Forum expert, gave an interview to To Vima, a Greek newspaper, for an in-depth discussion on China-US relations, Taiwan, China’s Middle East policy, and China-Russia relations.
Professor Tang stressed that despite the trade barriers and policy restrictions, the economic ties between China and the US remain strong. Citing a statement by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, he highlighted the central role of trade in promoting the bilateral relationship. Isolationism won’t deliver; instead, it could backfire on both sides. In addition, he shared his analysis on the continuity of US policy toward China and its changes, noting that despite their political differences, Beijing and Washington have demonstrated a common willingness to pursue stability and sustained cooperation.
Turning to the issue of Taiwan, Professor Tang made it clear that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, from its history to its culture. He underscored China’s commitment to a peaceful resolution of the issue, and that it has no intention of changing the status quo unless Taiwan or the US takes substantive secessionist action.
On the Middle East, Tang underlined that China, as a committed peace promoter in the region, has and will always oppose any external interferences in the internal affairs of other countries and any actions that would potentially undermine the security and stability of the region.
