In an interview with Russia Today TV on June 20, Gong Jiong, vice president for research at UIBE Israel and a China Forum expert, talked about China’s position on the Ukraine conflict and its ties with the US.

China has and will always stand for peace and humanitarianism, and its neutrality on the Ukraine crisis is legitimate, said Professor Gong. “Not imposing sanctions doesn’t mean that you are not on the side of moralism,” said he. China understands the complexity behind the conflict and has made it clear that sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Chinese Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis, released in early 2023, provides a valuable set of guiding principles for a political settlement of the crisis, said Gong. Meanwhile, as the presidential election approaches in the US, which holds a huge say on whether there can be a truce in Ukraine, people are divided within both the Democratic and Republican parties on this issue.

Speaking of China-US relations, Gong said the US sees China as a great challenge and is pursuing strategic competition with it. Although the line between confrontation and competition is sometimes blurred, the current bilateral relationship is more about competition rather than confrontation. According to him, Taiwan is the issue that is most likely to bring this relationship to the brink of confrontation.
