China Forum Expert Gong Jiong at MECARC’s 1st International Conference

2023-05-29

On May 16-18, 2023, the Middle East & Central Asia Research Center (MECARC) hosted its first annual international conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, themed “The Middle East 2023: Constructing Identities In a Constantly (Re)Shaping Region.” Gong Jiong, vice president for research at UIBE Israel, was invited to speak on a panel titled “The Ongoing Economic Crisis in Lebanon,” in which he focused on China-Lebanon relations and explored the economic, social, and religious landscape in Lebanon.

Despite Lebanon’s religious conflicts, its relations with China, especially in terms of trade, are valued by all sects in the country, said Professor Gong. China has long been Lebanon’s largest trading partner, and has provided significant investment and humanitarian aid there. He believes the close trade cooperation between the two countries means that the China Option has more economic than geopolitical relevance.

Professor Gong closed by pointing out that peace and stability in Lebanon are in China’s interest, and the China Option can help promote Lebanon’s political and economic development. A sound bilateral relationship benefits both sides and will help foster peace and stability in the region.

The Middle East & Central Asia Research Center, Ariel University, aims to broadcast the authentic voice of modern, contemporary research on a wide range of topical issues in relevant countries and regions.
