On April 26-29, 2023, Professor Tang Xiaoyang, chair of the Department of International Relations at Tsinghua University and a China Forum expert, attended the session on China-US relations at the Delphi Economic Forum in Greece.
Moderated by Athanassios G. Platias, dean of the School of International and European Studies at the University of Piraeus, the session also featured Xiao Junzheng, Chinese ambassador to Greece, and Cheng Li, director of the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution, among others.
Using geopolitics to interfere with market principles might be effective for a while but not for long, said Ambassador Xiao Junzheng in his address. He also stressed that China and the US is not in a new Cold War.
In his speech, Professor Tang Xiaoyang noted that unlike the Soviet Union and the US during the Cold War, China and the US, from the perspective of globalization in a broad sense, share many commonalities and areas of cooperation in economic, social and cultural spheres. The fundamental solution to the rise of populism and geopolitical tensions requires systemic reforms in Western countries, he added.
The Delphi Economic Forum is the largest economic conference in Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean region.
