On April 20, Gong Jiong, an expert at China Forum under the Center for International Security and Strategy of Tsinghua University and vice president for research, UIBE-ISRAEL, gave an interview to i24NEWS on China-US ties.

Washington has repeatedly stated that it does not seek a “new cold war” with China, and the US and China share a broad trade relationship, which requires the two countries to compete fairly to avoid a cold war, Professor Gong said when asked whether China and the US are moving toward a new cold war.

In addition, he stressed that China has made it clear the unmanned civilian airship that flew over US territory earlier this year was used for meteorological purposes and was an unexpected and isolated event.

Professor Gong then turned to the Taiwan question, noting that it concerns China’s sovereignty and China will never back down over this issue. “Taiwan independence” forces and US interference have stirred up tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The US has been using its influence to deter Taiwan’s so-called “diplomatic allies” from establishing diplomatic relations with the Chinese mainland, which will do no good to the resolution of the Taiwan question.
