China Forum Expert Zhou Bo on China’s Taiwan Stance in DW Documentary

2023-01-19

At the end of 2022, Deutsche Welle (DW) aired a one-hour documentary entitled “Taiwan: Why the US & China are on collision course for war,” which was simultaneously launched on related websites, arousing attention and reactions.

The film features scholars and political figures including Zhou Bo, senior fellow at Tsinghua University’s Center for International Security and Strategy and China Forum expert; Kevin Rudd, former prime minister of Australia; Michèle Flournoy, president of the Center for a New American Security and former US undersecretary of defense; Meia Nouwens, senior fellow for Chinese security and defense policy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS); Annalena Baerbock, federal foreign minister of Germany; Robert Habeck, vice chancellor of Germany; and Till Steffen, vice chair of the Berlin-Taipei Friendship Group, among others. They were invited to explain the historical roots of the Taiwan question, analyze its evolution and the dangers it poses today, present where stakeholders stand, predict future dynamics, and propose suggestions on how a war may be prevented.

Zhou Bo stated China’s position on the Taiwan question. By stepping up its arms sales to Taiwan and sending more officials there, Washington has been violating the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, said Zhou. In fact, the US is hollowing out the one-China principle and changing its substance with the intention to contain China. The Chinese mainland is steadfastly determined to achieve national reunification, and has no timetable for it. The use of force is only a last resort, as the peaceful reunification with Taiwan is in the best interest of both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
