China Forum Experts at 48th Ambrosetti Forum

2022-09-12

On September 2-3, The European House-Ambrosetti held the 48th edition of its Forum “Intelligence of the World, Europe, and Italy.” China Forum Experts Professor Gong Jiong and Professor Huang Jing attended the “ChinaHUB-Beijing” session of the forum.

Professor Gong noted that the competition between China and the US is one of global influence, geopolitics, and technological superiority. Despite how China has made clear that it has no intention of competing ideologically with the US, the US still unilaterally fomented a rivalry with China, which has led to an increasingly polarized world. The lesson we have learned from the pandemic is the need to improve the resilience and reliability of global supply chains, but free trade is now more associated with so-called “national security,” which is at odd with its very principles.

Professor Huang believes that the current international order is being challenged by the Russia-Ukraine War, and that China has made three fundamental judgments amid the changing global dynamics. First, it needs to safeguard the existing international order and play an active and constructive role in it—as a builder of world peace, a provider of public goods, and a defender of the international order. Second, China wants to see a peaceful and stable America because that is in its long-term interests. Third, China needs to maintain a stable, or at least manageable, bilateral relationship with the US.

Professor Huang also had an in-depth and frank discussion with US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns on a wide range of topics, including the China-US “competition,” China’s territorial disputes with its neighbors, the situation across the Taiwan Strait, the CHIPS Act, Xinjiang, human rights issues, climate cooperation, etc.

The annual forum of the European House-Ambrosetti is one of the world’s most important high-level gatherings.
