On June 8, Huang Jing, China Forum expert and professor at Shanghai International Studies University, was invited to attend the opening ceremony of the III Foro Internacional EXPANSIÓN in Spain, where he delivered a keynote speech titled “The Impact of Russo-Ukrainian War on US-China Relations” and answered related questions.

China adopts a peaceful solution-oriented “principled neutrality” on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, Professor Huang said, adding that it is essential to reach a practical compromise that would bring the war to an end as soon as possible and institutionalize peace in the form of a treaty. Replicable approaches include the Normandy Format and the Minsk agreements, he proposed.

With its foreign policy being kidnapped by the unbridgeable social divide and political polarization at home, it was the US who initiated its current competition with China, Professor Huang stressed. As US-China will certainly bring stability and greater benefits to both countries and the world, preventing conflict and bringing the bilateral ties back to the track of cooperation rather than confrontation depends on the efforts of not only the two countries, but also the wider international community.

The Foro Internacional EXPANSIÓN, a summit of the world’s leading think tanks, held its third session in the Spanish city of Alcalá de Henares on June 8-9 this year with the theme “The world changes: new frontiers of growth and development,” focusing on the impact of the war in Ukraine, inflation, rising interest rates, weak economic growth, COVID-19 shockwaves, as well as emerging opportunities in technology, renewable energy, and electric vehicles.
