Safeguarding peace is one of the most pressing challenges to the international community, the gravity of which has been unseen since the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, said Professor Zhao. Talking about the priorities and possible challenges for China-Russia ties in the time ahead, he noted that as the two powers share not only a major role but a greater responsibility in maintaining international peace and security, their bilateral ties must not be looked at in isolation from this theme. The top priority now is to end the war and restore peace. Without peace, even a random incident can lead to unpredictable consequences. Such security uncertainty carries great danger: if a conflict were to escalate, especially a direct military or even nuclear conflict between NATO and Russia, it would bring about catastrophic damage for all life on earth. Preventing such a situation is undoubtedly an important element in the current China-Russia relationship.

The Primakov Readings, organized by the Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, occupies a prominent place among the most significant international conferences on international relations.
