San Francisco’s Chinatown came alive on Friday night as thousands of people descended on Grant Avenue in a celebration of the city’s Asian culture and an unofficial welcome event for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Lion dancers accompanied by a small drum corps took over Grant Avenue, with a packed crowd following the performance as it weaved down the street.

Across town, preparations for the APEC CEO Summit brought attendees to Epic Cleantec, a San Francisco water recycling startup on Market Street. “San Francisco is the first city in the country to actually require that all new large buildings have to have on-site water recycling systems,” said Tartakovsky, who led a tour for APEC attendees of the company facility which has a special chemical process that makes wastewater into usable graywater and soil. Epic Cleantec has even devised a way of turning greywater into beer, which they say will be served at one APEC reception this week.

San Francisco ‘Cleaned Up’ Streets Ahead of APEC
But How and What, Exactly, Did It Do?

At a White House press conference, a reporter raised her hand and asked National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan a question about the APEC summit being held in San Francisco this week. “San Francisco has cleaned up their streets ahead of President Biden and President Xi’s meeting,” the reporter said. “They’ve moved homeless to other parts of the city, cleared tent cities and trash off the street. Is the president embarrassed that an American city needs to go through a total makeover to be presentable for his out-of-town guests?” Sullivan deflected the question, but as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering swings into full gear, San Franciscans themselves are noting a timely improvement in the condition of the city’s streets—and wondering how it was accomplished and whether it will last once the summit ends Friday.
