Like the January 6, 2021 mob attack on the US capitol involving white supremacists, the Covid-19 pandemic, police killings of Black and brown people, and other events over the past year laid bare major human rights failings in the United States, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2021. President-elect Joe Biden should not only repair recent damage done to human rights protections in the US, but pursue broad, systemic changes to address persistent racial inequality, protect people from violent white extremism, uphold the rights of migrants and asylum seekers, and address economic disparities, including the impacts of climate change.

When scores of American politicians almost unanimously condemned violent protesters for breaking into the U.S. Capitol, they are in fact slapping themselves in the face.

Not too long ago, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the violent protests in Hong Kong, which caused great damage to public facilities and seriously undermined social stability, “a beautiful sight to behold” back in 2019.On Thursday, she labeled the Capitol breach “an armed insurrection against America.” Also, many other politicians joined her in calling those protesters “mobs” and their intrusion an “insurrection.”

Targeting five lies of Adrian Zenz, including his claim that “natural population growth in Xinjiang has declined dramatically since 2015,” the Chinese researchers revealed the absurdity of Adrian Zenz’s claims with statistics and proved he had tampered with the figures of relevant official documents for his so-called report. The article said some Western politicians and anti-China “scholars” are fabricating all kinds of lies relating to Xinjiang and other Chinese affairs out of ideological bias or other ulterior motives.

December was by far America’s deadliest month yet, and health experts are warning that January could be more terrible still because of family gatherings and travel over the holidays, while administration of the coronavirus vaccines approved so far for emergency use in the US has fallen far behind the federal government’s own goals. Trump has long downplayed the virus and scorned masks, and many of his ardent supporters have followed his example.

(Jan 6, 2021, The Guardian, ‘The US lost control’: America records its most ever Covid-19 deaths in a day)

The country is recording at least 193,600 new coronavirus cases and at least 3,030 Covid-related deaths each day, based on a seven-day average calculated by CNBC using Johns Hopkins University data. New, more infectious strains of the virus have appeared in the U.S. At least 406,000 Americans have died from the virus since the pandemic began early last year. The U.S. failed to meet its target of vaccinating 20 million people by the end of 2020. Under former President Donald Trump’s administration, just over 14.2 million people had received one or more doses of the Covid-19 vaccine as of Wednesday morning, according to CDC data.

For the last two years, the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), or “Remain in Mexico” policy, have forced almost 70,000 people seeking asylum in the United States to wait in dangerous Mexican border towns while their cases pend – in violation of U.S. and international law, which prohibits returning asylum seekers to places where they fear that they may be persecuted. With the indefinite postponement of immigration hearings due to COVID-19, asylum seekers in MPP face ever-lengthening periods of stay in Mexico, where many have experienced violence, trauma, and human rights abuses.

In a report published on Wednesday, Human Rights Watch described how Trump’s policy “needlessly and foreseeably exposed [asylum seekers] to considerable risk of serious harm”. The group said those interviewed for its report, including children, “described rape or attempted rape and other sexual assault, abduction for ransom, extortion, armed robbery, and other crimes committed against them”.

Citing the rapidly deteriorating health of detainees who remain, along with the mental and physical harm inflicted on them in cruel and inhuman conditions, eight right experts warned that the aging inmates are at increasing risk. “Guantánamo is a place of arbitrariness and abuse, a site where torture and ill-treatment was rampant and remains institutionalized, where the rule of law is effectively suspended, and where justice is denied”, the experts said on the 19th anniversary of its establishment, on 11 January 2002. Moreover, they pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic is further exacerbating health vulnerabilities for the increasingly elderly prison population. “The very existence of this facility is a disgrace for the United States and the international community as a whole”, the UN experts said. “Guantánamo should have been closed a long time ago”.

Amnesty International has released a new report highlighting ongoing and historic human rights violations at the Guantánamo Bay detention facility, as detentions there enter their 20th year and as a new President prepares to enter the White House. The report documents a catalogue of human rights violations perpetrated against those detained at the camp, where victims of torture are held with inadequate medical care indefinitely and in the absence of fair trials. Transfers out of the facility have stalled, and even those cleared for release have remained incarcerated for years on end.
