China’s rise is unstoppable, Xi Jinping declared. The country will not be lectured. And those who try to block its ascent will hit a “Great Wall of steel.”
The speech intended to show that China and its ruling party would not tolerate foreign obstruction on the country’s path to becoming a superpower. And each time Mr. Xi made a pugnacious comment, the crowd applauded and roared approval.
“His other message that stood out was that the party is the representative of the people’s and the whole country’s interests — nobody can try to split the party from the nation; they’re a unified whole.”

On July 1, the Chinese Communist Party celebrates its centenary. For those in the West banking on its demise, they’re sorely mistaken.
Those who look to Russia for a historical parallel for China’s Communist Party mistake its staying power. Lenin’s party and the Soviet Union were in death throes at a comparable point in their life cycle. The party has deeply Chinese roots. It exists on a continuum with China’s long history. It’s not going anywhere.
The C.C.P. diligently reads historical events for lessons. That has helped it navigate crises and, often, emerge stronger.
In 100 years — fleetingly short in Chinese history — it has reached wide and deep into the substrata of Chinese society like the strong roots of a banyan tree, fusing every aspect of people’s lives with punishment and reward, mixing indigenous cultural norms and Western materialistic consumption. It is almost impossible to uproot and overturn a giant banyan tree.

The great debate over which system is better hasn’t faded away. In fact, it’s gearing up for another round. But rather than see competition with China as a zero-sum game, the United States could embrace a way of competing that spurs us to make investments in our people that we should have been making all along.
“It’s no longer ‘China is rising,’” said David Shambaugh, the author of several books on China, including a new one, “China’s Leaders: From Mao to Now.” “China has risen. It is here.”
The arrival of China as a global power has caused heartburn in Washington. The Biden administration has made it clear that it sees China as the greatest geopolitical challenge of the 21st century. A few weeks ago, Democrats and Republicans overcame their hatred of each other long enough to pass the United States Innovation and Competition Act of 2021, which boosts investment in research and higher education. And a recent NATO summit addressed China’s “growing influence” as a challenge for the alliance. Talk like that has sparked fears of a new and terrible cold war.
That’s understandable, since the growing rivalry has the potential to spiral out of control and cause unthinkable damage. But if it is managed correctly, the competition could actually be a good thing for the United States, for China and for the world.
If there’s one thing our capitalist country should know, it’s that competition is healthy. Monopolies tend to produce laziness, distortions and flat-out extortion. This is true in economics, and it’s true when it comes to geopolitical supremacy. Superpower status has allowed Americans to neglect the aspirations of the Global South while squandering blood and treasure in disastrous wars of choice in Afghanistan and Iraq. It lulled Americans into believing that capitalism and democracy are destiny for all mankind — so obviously so that we don’t even have to make a case for them anymore. It left us imagining that our country could run without investments in the education, civic learning or sense of common purpose that keep democracies healthy and strong.
If China’s Covid diplomacy pushes the United States to “become an arsenal of vaccines for other countries,” as Mr. Biden promised, that’s a win-win. And if, in an effort to counter China’s $1.2 trillion Belt and Road plan to boost infrastructure around the world, Western countries start lending more money to developing countries at better interest rates, then African and Latin American countries might finally be able to get a fair shake.
“If it gets the U.S. out of our doldrums, we could achieve a lot of at least the liberal agenda in the country,” Bruce Dickson, a political scientist at George Washington University who studies the Chinese Communist Party, told me. “In that sense, the competition of China could be a good thing.
As this rivalry heats up, China and the United States are grappling with similar problems: vast inequality, manufacturers leaving for lower-wage countries, environmental damage and the impossible dreams of a precarious middle class. We must keep the doors of communication open and work together where we can address common challenges.

"In the new era, our young people should make it their mission to contribute to national rejuvenation and aspire to become more proud, confident and assured in their identity as Chinese people so that they can live up to the promise of their youth and the expectations of our times, our Party, and our people.
"Xi, who is also China's president, has always attached great importance to the injection of new blood into the Party, and once said the country's development has always depended on young people. According to the latest figures, there are now 23.68 million Party members age 35 or younger, accounting for 24.9 percent of the total.
I spoke to many young people at the celebration, most of them college students looking ahead to their futures with ambition and confidence.
With the CPC's dedication to the people and full and rigorous self-governance, we have every reason to believe that it will continuously absorb China's most outstanding youths into its membership, a key factor that will ensure its vitality and long-term success.

The celebration of the centenary of the Communist Party of China on Thursday marked a historic achievement for mankind, as the world's most populous nation has built itself into a "moderately prosperous society in all respects".
Experts said that under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee, led by General Secretary Xi Jinping, the hard-won success marks a watershed in the nation's "three-step" modernization drive. The plan was rolled out 34 years ago with the aim of making a "great modern socialist country" out of a largely agrarian China over a span of about 70 years.
The accomplishments were also a boon to global development and human rights protection, they added.
"The success is a milestone as China modernizes," said Ni Degang, a researcher on Marxism in Beijing. "It has cemented the foundations for constructing a modernized socialist country."
He added that over the past 70 years, China has achieved what the West did over three centuries, which he described as "a marvelous leap".
The Party's leadership has played a central role, while the devotion and hard work of 1.4 billion Chinese has also been indispensable, he noted.
Dong Zhenhua, a professor of Marxist philosophy at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee in Beijing, said that underpinning the miracle is China's political system, which allows the Party to make development plans decades ahead and concentrate the nation's attention and resources on tackling the most pressing issues.
