9月16日（星期三）10:00—11:30，清华大学战略与安全研究中心（CISS）将在清华大学明理楼428B会议室举办专题对话，特邀英国牛津大学现代中东史教授、英国国家学术院院士尤金·罗根（Eugene Rogan），围绕其新作《大马士革事件：1860年屠杀与现代中东的形成》展开交流。本次活动将从1860年大马士革的群体暴力及城市重建出发，讨论奥斯曼帝国改革、宗教社群关系与现代中东秩序的形成，并结合历史研究回应当前中东地区的形势与热点问题。欢迎各界人士报名参与。

The Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS) at Tsinghua University will host a special dialogue on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30. The event will take place in Meeting Room 428B, Mingli Building, Tsinghua University, featuring Professor Eugene Rogan, Professor of the Modern History of the Middle East at the University of Oxford and Fellow of the British Academy. During the event, Professor Rogan will discuss his new book, The Damascus Events: The 1860 Massacre and the Making of the Modern Middle East. Taking the 1860 outbreak of communal violence in Damascus and the city’s reconstruction as a starting point, the dialogue will explore Ottoman reforms, relations among religious communities, and the formation of the modern Middle East order, while connecting historical research to the current situation and key issues in the Middle East. The Damascus Events: The 1860 Massacre and the Making of the Modern Middle East

1860年夏，黎巴嫩山地与大马士革爆发大规模群体暴力，长期共处的宗教社群骤然陷入冲突。这场危机及其后的城市重建，深刻影响了奥斯曼帝国的改革进程，也成为理解现代中东形成的重要切口。在《大马士革事件》中，尤金·罗根教授以多位当地人物的亲历记录为线索，还原暴力发生、秩序瓦解与社会重建的过程。全书既关注冲突背后的宗教、经济和政治因素，也考察奥斯曼政府如何惩办责任人、安置受害者，并在欧洲列强的压力下维护主权。

In the summer of 1860, large-scale communal violence erupted in Mount Lebanon and Damascus, abruptly shattering relations among religious communities that had lived alongside one another for centuries. The crisis and the subsequent reconstruction of Damascus profoundly shaped the Ottoman reform process and provide an important lens through which to understand the making of the modern Middle East.In The Damascus Events, Professor Eugene Rogan draws on eyewitness accounts from a diverse group of local figures to reconstruct the outbreak of violence, the collapse of public order, and the city’s subsequent recovery. The book examines the religious, economic, and political forces behind the conflict, as well as the Ottoman government’s efforts to punish those responsible, support the victims, and defend its sovereignty under pressure from the European powers.

Taking Professor Eugene Rogan’s latest book, The Damascus Events, as its starting point, the discussion will extend to the changing regional order, shifts in US Middle East strategy, and the strategic autonomy and economic transformation of the Gulf states, exploring how historical research can help us better understand the Middle East’s ongoing transformations.

英国国家学术院院士，英国牛津大学亚洲与中东研究学院现代中东史教授、牛津大学圣安东尼学院中东中心主任。研究领域涵盖奥斯曼帝国晚期、现代阿拉伯世界、第一次世界大战与中东、巴勒斯坦问题以及阿拉伯民族主义等，尤其重视阿拉伯语地方史料与普通人的亲历记录，致力于从中东社会自身的经验出发重新书写近现代历史。其代表作包括《阿拉伯人：一部历史》《奥斯曼帝国的衰亡：第一次世界大战在中东》《现代中东的国家边界》《为了巴勒斯坦的战争》以及新作《大马士革事件》等。其中，《阿拉伯人》和《奥斯曼帝国的衰亡》已被译为多种语言，受到学界和大众读者广泛关注。

A Fellow of the British Academy, Eugene Rogan is Professor of Modern Middle Eastern History at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Oxford, and Director of the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College, Oxford.His research spans the late Ottoman Empire, the modern Arab world, the First World War in the Middle East, Palestine, and Arab nationalism. Drawing extensively on local Arabic-language sources and eyewitness accounts, he seeks to reinterpret modern Middle Eastern history through the experiences of the region’s own societies and people. His major publications include The Arabs: A History, The Fall of the Ottomans: The Great War in the Middle East, 1914–1920, Frontiers of the State in the Late Ottoman Empire, The War for Palestine, and his latest book, The Damascus Events. The Arabs and The Fall of the Ottomans have been translated into numerous languages and have received wide recognition from scholars and general readers alike.

清华大学战略与安全研究中心博士后、助理研究员，中国论坛媒体传播主任。北京大学中东研究方向博士，牛津大学全球与区域研究院访问学者。主要研究领域：美国外交、中东外交和国际传播。著有《美国的中东政策研究（2009-2017）》（世界知识出版社，2026），曾多次参与外交部、中宣部等部委重大研究课题，多次作为中国学者代表参加重要国际论坛及中美中东二轨对话，多次应邀给发改委、国开行、证监会等部委讲课，是央视、凤凰卫视、东方卫视等多家媒体的特约评论员。评论文章及观点见诸于《光明日报》《纽约时报》《联合早报》《中国日报》等。曾就职于新浪国际，负责国际新闻原创报道及评论节目主持，创办个人自媒体“文晶Talk”，在欧美、中东和东南亚地区40多个国家进行新闻报道和田野调查。近年频繁往返于中国与中东，多次赴沙特、伊朗、卡塔尔、黎巴嫩、伊拉克等国家调研。

Jodie Wen is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Research Fellow at the Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS), Tsinghua University, and Director of Media and Communications for the China Forum. She holds a PhD in Middle Eastern studies from Peking University and was a Visiting Scholar at the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies. Her research focuses on US foreign policy, Middle Eastern affairs, and international communication. She is the author of US Policy toward the Middle East, 2009–2017 (World Affairs Press, 2026) and has contributed to major research projects commissioned by Chinese government institutions. She has represented Chinese scholars at international forums and Track II dialogues and is a regular commentator for CCTV, Phoenix TV, and Dragon TV. Her views have appeared in Guangming Daily, The New York Times, Lianhe Zaobao, and China Daily. A former international news journalist at Sina and founder of “Wen Jing Talk,” she has conducted reporting and field research in more than 40 countries, including extensive recent visits to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, and Iraq.
