The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance around the world has tripled between since 2015, rising to 235 million as protracted conflict, the climate crisis and COVID-19 have taken their toll. These multiplying crises demand new thinking and new partnerships if they are to be resolved.

Humanitarian Crisis, Global Responsibility and our Interconnected World
The Rt. Hon. David Miliband, former British Foreign Secretary and current President & CEO of the New York-based International Rescue Committee, will highlight the urgent humanitarian needs in fragile and conflict-affected countries and discuss the path forward for global action based on principles of shared responsibility, mutual accountability and global rules.

David Wright Miliband
Former British Foreign Secretary
President of the International Rescue Committee
David Miliband is the President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee. He oversees the agency’s relief and development operations in over 30 countries, its refugee resettlement and assistance programs throughout the United States and the IRC’s advocacy efforts in Washington and other capitals on behalf of the world’s most vulnerable people. David has had a distinguished political career in the United Kingdom. From 2007 to 2010, he served as the youngest Foreign Secretary in three decades, driving advancements in human rights and representing the United Kingdom throughout the world. 
His accomplishments have earned him a reputation, in former President Bill Clinton's words, as "one of the ablest, most creative public servants of our time.” In 2016 David was named one of the World’s Greatest Leaders by Fortune Magazine and in 2018 he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.David is also the author of the book, Rescue: Refugees and the Political Crisis of Our Time. As the son of refugees, David brings a personal commitment to the IRC's work and to the premise of the book: that we can rescue the dignity and hopes of refugees and displaced people. And if we help them, in the process we will rescue our own values.

Da Wei
Professor in the Department of International Relations at Tsinghua University
Deputy Director at Tsinghua’s Center for International  Security and Strategy (CISS)
Da Wei is a professor in the Department of International Relations at Tsinghua University. He is also the deputy director of Tsinghua’s Center for International Security and Strategy (CISS). Dr. Da ’s research expertise includes U.S. foreign policy and U.S.-China relations. As an experienced analyst, he has written hundreds of policy papers for the Chinese government and has published dozens of academic papers in journals both in China and the United States. Dr. Da has worked in China’s think tank and university community for more than two decades. Prior to his current positions, Dr. Da was an assistant president at the University of International Relations (UIR) and the director of the Institute of American Studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR).

Student Challenge Team Recruitment

Unlike the typical academic panels, Tsinghua TopTalk emphasizes equal communication between students and top scholars and field experts. At each event, there will be a challenge session with the student challenge team.
The challenge team consists of students from majors of similar research expertise as the guest. They will organize several internal discussions before forming a logical and in-depth dialogue content to discuss with the speaker.
The event is now open to all students at Tsinghua University, and we are recruiting four students to be on the challenge team to have conversations with the two guests at the event. Students who wish to join the student team should send their profiles to the International Exchange Department of the Graduate Union at thuguid@mail.tsinghua.edu.cn by April 24, 2021. The email subject and attachment name “[34th Tsinghua TopTalk Student Challenge Team Registration] + Name”.

"Tsinghua TopTalk" is a multi-disciplinary academic exchange activity initiated and sponsored by Graduate Union of Tsinghua University in 2013. "TopTalk" aims to invite academic masters of various disciplines, mainly Nobel Prize winner, Turing prize winner and Fields Medal winner, to hold dialogue with Tsinghua students, encourage Tsinghua students to question academic authority, challenge existing academic paradigm, and strive to "stimulate innovation through dialogue", to build a high-level academic exchange platform for Tsinghua students.
